Neolamprologus Leleupi (Neolamprologus leleupi)

Brilliant Golden Lake Tanganyika Cichlid with Bold Personality

Details

The Neolamprologus Leleupi (Neolamprologus leleupi) is one of the most striking cichlids from Lake Tanganyika, famous for its vibrant golden-yellow to orange coloration and sleek body shape. Native to the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika in Africa, this species thrives among caves and rock formations where it establishes territories and displays fascinating natural behaviors.

Leleupi are an excellent choice for experienced aquarists looking to create an authentic African cichlid aquarium. Their vivid coloration provides a stunning contrast against dark rockwork, making them a standout centerpiece in Tanganyikan community setups.

  • Frozen brine shrimp
  • Krill

Behavior & Compatibility

Suitable tank mates include:

  • Other Tanganyikan cichlids of similar temperament
  • Julidochromis species
  • Cyprichromis species
  • Synodontis catfish
  • Shell dwellers in appropriately sized aquariums

Avoid housing them with peaceful community fish or soft-water species.

  • Their brilliant yellow-orange coloration intensifies under proper nutrition and water conditions.
  • Forms monogamous breeding pairs that actively guard eggs and fry.
  • Requires hard, alkaline water to thrive.
