Species: Clown Killifish (Epiplatys annulatus)
Clown Killifish, also known as Rocket Killifish, are small, vibrant surface-dwelling fish prized for their striking coloration and unique pattern. With their slender bodies, bold banding, and colorful tails, they resemble tiny rockets gliding across the water’s surface. These peaceful nano fish are perfect for planted aquariums and species-focused setups.
Clown Killifish (Epiplatys annulatus) are among the smallest killifish species, featuring alternating dark and light vertical bands along their body and bright, often red, yellow, or blue accents in their fins—especially the tail. Males tend to be more colorful, displaying elongated, vivid tail patterns that give them their “rocket” nickname.
They are primarily surface dwellers and thrive in calm, well-planted aquariums with floating plants that provide cover and security. Their small size and gentle nature make them ideal for nano tanks and peaceful community setups with similarly sized fish.

Clown Killifish are peaceful and best kept in small groups, ideally with more females than males. They spend most of their time near the surface, often among floating plants. Suitable tank mates include other small, non-aggressive fish and shrimp, though very small shrimplets may be eaten. Avoid housing with larger or boisterous species.
These fish are excellent jumpers, so a tight-fitting lid is essential. They prefer low-flow environments and subdued lighting with floating plants to mimic their natural habitat. Clown Killifish can be bred in captivity, often laying eggs in floating plants or spawning mops. Stable water conditions and gentle filtration are key to their health and long-term success.
