Bumblebee Goby (Brachygobius spp.) – Striking Yellow-Black Nano Goby for Brackish or Freshwater Setups
Description:
The Bumblebee Goby is a small, boldly patterned goby known for its alternating black and yellow bands and charming personality. Native to Southeast Asia, this species is most commonly kept in lightly brackish aquariums but can also adapt to freshwater under the right conditions. Its eye-catching coloration and bottom-dwelling behavior make it a popular choice for nano tanks and species-specific setups.
These gobies prefer a sandy substrate with plenty of hiding spots like rocks, driftwood, or caves. They are best kept in small groups and thrive in well-maintained aquariums with stable water quality and gentle flow.
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Peaceful but territorial with their own kind
Size: 1–1.5 inches (2.5–4 cm)
Lifespan: 3–4 years
Diet: Carnivorous – Prefers live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia
Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
pH: 7.0–8.0
Hardness: Moderate to hard
Salinity: Freshwater to lightly brackish (specific gravity 1.002–1.005 preferred)
Behavior & Compatibility:
Best kept in small groups with plenty of space and territory. While peaceful toward other species, males may squabble among themselves—ensure enough hiding spots to reduce tension. Suitable tankmates include small, peaceful fish that tolerate harder or lightly brackish water.
Notes:
Thrive on live/frozen foods—may reject dry flakes or pellets.
Can be kept in freshwater but prefer a small amount of salt for long-term health.
Great for nano aquariums with a focus on unique species.
