Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis)

Peaceful Freshwater Filter-Feeding Shrimp for Community and Planted Aquariums

Details

The Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis), also known as the Wood Shrimp, Fan Shrimp, or Singapore Flower Shrimp, is a fascinating freshwater invertebrate prized for its unique filter-feeding behavior. Instead of scavenging like many other shrimp species, Bamboo Shrimp use their delicate fan-like appendages to capture tiny food particles carried by the current.

These gentle giants are an excellent addition to peaceful community aquariums and heavily planted setups with moderate to strong water flow. Their constantly changing coloration—from tan and brown to reddish hues—along with their interesting feeding behavior make them a favorite among freshwater aquarium enthusiasts.

Peaceful

Size

2.5–4 inches (6–10 cm)

  • Powdered shrimp foods

  • Spirulina powder

  • Finely crushed high-quality fish foods

  • Phytoplankton

  • Microplankton

Supplemental feeding is recommended in very clean aquariums where natural suspended food is limited.

A mature aquarium with moderate to strong water movement is highly recommended.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)

  • pH: 6.5–7.8

  • GH: 4–12 dGH

Stable water quality and excellent filtration are important for long-term success.

Behavior & Compatibility

Bamboo Shrimp are peaceful, non-aggressive invertebrates that spend much of their day perched on rocks, driftwood, or decorations positioned in the current while filtering food from the water. They are social and can be kept individually or in small groups.

Suitable tank mates include:

  • Neocaridina Shrimp

  • Caridina Shrimp

  • Corydoras Catfish

  • Small Tetras

  • Rasboras

  • Peaceful Gouramis

  • Otocinclus

  • Small Rainbowfish

Avoid housing them with aggressive fish or species known to prey on shrimp.

Notes

  • Requires moderate to strong water flow for natural feeding behavior.

  • Best kept in mature aquariums with stable water conditions.

  • Provide rocks, driftwood, or elevated perches near areas of current.

  • May change color depending on mood, environment, and molting cycle.

  • Completely peaceful and safe for planted community aquariums.

  • Do not rely solely on leftover fish food; supplemental filter-feeding foods help maintain optimal health.
